Meet Asha… at Madame Tussauds
Asha Bhosle to join lifelike line-up of international superstars as world-famous waxworks museum gets ready to open in New Delhi this summer
Travelling to New Delhi anytime soon? Fans of world-renowned singer Asha Bhosle can not only dine on her North-West Indian-inspired food at 14 restaurants worldwide, but pose for a picture with the star herself at the new Madame Tussauds museum.
The hottest entertainment ticket in town, and brought to the city as part of the India-UK Year of Culture 2017, the world-famous waxworks museum is located in the iconic Regal Building in Connaught Place.
This is the first India location for the UK-based Merlin Entertainment-owned attraction, with 116 Madame Tussauds’ in 24 countries.
A legend immortalised
Around 50 Indian actors, singers and celebrities will be in the spotlight at the new location, alongside 60 international figures, with Asha Bhosle set to take her place among a stellar cast of Bollywood icons.
Asha met with the Madame Tussauds team last year when they took more than 150 specific measurements, and images, to help in bringing the wax Asha Bhosle realistically to life.
Commenting on the experience, she said: “Thank you to Madame Tussauds and my fans for considering me for this incredible honour. I am thrilled and humbled.
“Having a wax figure is a completely ecstatic feeling and it’s a new experience for me. This is the first time I have undergone a sitting and I must thank them for making it a unique and exciting experience. I am excited to see and meet my final figure when the attraction opens.
From Bollywood to the world
The global appeal of Bollywood has already made its mark in other prominent Madame Tussaud locations, with its original London museum home to several Bollywood figures, and a favourite among Indian tourists visiting the UK.
“Ever since we introduced Amitabh Bachchan as the first Bollywood figure in Madame Tussauds, London in 2000, we have seen how it appeals to the Indian consumer, and having a permanent attraction in the heart of the country’s capital made perfect sense for the evolution of the Madame Tussauds story,” said John Jakobsen from Merlin Entertainment.
Anshul Jain, general manager and director, Merlin Entertainments India, added:
“Asha Bhosle is one of the greatest singers of all times, so, her figure has been an obvious choice to be present at Madame Tussauds Delhi. She has admirers from all the generations and is loved by everyone for her contribution in the music fraternity.”
